A group of interesting inscribed silver Byzantine appliqués
Lot 3466
Leontios, monk and priest (donor), circa 10th-11th centuries. Uniface Appliqué (Gilt silver, 21x78 mm, 20x53 mm, 9x27 mm), in three fragments. First fragment: [Λ]ЄONTHO MOX K, ΠP MNHΘTI. Second fragment: C + MNCΘTI KЄ T. Third fragment: ON Δ૪[ΛⲰN]. Very fine.

Evidently, these silver gilt fragments were once applied to a precious object, likely a chalice. The fragments belong to a single dedicatory inscription in which the donors, of whom only one name is preserved, invoke Christ to remember them. The first fragment names Leontios, who was a monk (monachos) and a priest (presbyteros)
